Transport Accelerated

Transport Accelerated is a font design inspired by Transport, a typeface used for road signs around the world, mainly lin the UK. In The Visual History of Type, Paul McNeil describes Trasport as a typeface that “performed efficiently for so long that most people are compltely unaware of them.” I was this as an opportunity to make a distinctive font and shine a new light on Transport.

My concept for modification was based on the physical context around Transport - the highway and speed. Like how animation uses multiple frames to create movement, I treated the letterforms as frames, duplicated them, and distributed them into the distance that shows an accelerated motion. The final font was created by merging these frames of letterforms.

I also designed the type specimen book to illustrate the contextual research, concept explorations, and application.
